Life in Brisbane is never simple for those who walk between the worlds.
Verity's all about protecting her city, but right now that's mostly running surveillance and handling the less exciting cases for the Weyrd Council- after all, it's hard to chase the bad guys through the streets of Brisbane when you're really, really pregnant.
An insurance investigation sounds pretty harmless, even if it is for 'Unusual Happenstance'. That's not usually a clause Normals use- it covers all-purpose hauntingly, angry genii loci, ectoplasmic home invasion, demonic possession, that sort of thing- but Susan Beckett's claimed three times in three months. Her house keeps getting inundated with mud, but she's still insisting she doesn't need or want help... Until the dry-land drowning begin.
V's first lead in takers her to Chinatown, where she is confronted by kitsune assassins. But when she suddenly goes into labour, it's clear the fox spirits are not going to be helpful.
My review
Thoughts on the book: Once again we are thrust into the Weyrd world that Angela Slatter has created, with our main kick ass female heroine Verity Fassbinder leading the way. In Corpselight a Verity is very pregnant and is still running around working for the Newley reformed Weyrd council trying to solve all of the issues that pop up in Brisbane and we also get to meet some more new and interesting Weyrd.
It's hard to write this review without giving so much away. Verity learns so much about her past in Corpselight and especially about her immediate and extended family. She also feels one of the biggest betrayals of her life by some people that she is incredibly close to, but as with everything she takes puts it on the back burner as such and gets on with business. She also once again outs her life and body on the line without thinking twice about it which annoys a few people this time as she now not only has David but also their baby girl Maisie.
On the subject of David I still don't entirely trust him still. He still seems to good to be true, especially in book 2 when Maisie comes along and he basically takes the mum role when Verity can't. I'm still expecting him to turn around and say he is Weryd because he is just too ok with the whole world. I don't think anyone would be that OK if someone told them that the world they thought they knew wasn't exactly how they thought it was.
Finally I want to commend the amazing writing that Angela does with each story. She certainly knows how to write an amazing story that not only keeps the reader enthralled but also has them constantly second guessing themselves and also imaging all the amazing new creatures that she has created. Angela also knows how to write storylines that would normally take most authors several books to accomplish the same thing. The amount of things that she can pack into one single novel is amazing and yet the author packs it all in flawlessly and you don't even realise it's over until it is and what's even better is that it's not 500+ pages. It's always action packed, fast paced writing and I know I certainly can't wait for book 3 to come out
