It's bad enough having a mum dippy enough to name you Owl, but when you've got a dad you've never met, a best friend who needs you more than ever and a new boy at school giving you weird looks, there's not a lot of room for much else.

So when Owl starts seeing strange frost patterns on her skin, she's tempted to just burrow down under the duvet and forget all about it. Could her strange new powers be linked to her mysterious father? And what will happen when she enters the magical world of winter for the first time?

My review
Thoughts on the book: A Girl called Owl tells the story of a young girl called Owl who was brought up by her mother and has never known her father. She has grown up with her mother telling her fairytale stories of a magical ice kingdom where a young girl and boy have adventures. Little does she know that these stories are not actually fairytales but stories that actually happened. One day Owl starts to see frost patterns creeping over her skin. Of course she thinks that it's her imagination but when it keeps happening she knows it must be something else entirely. But Owl will never guess what it actually means for her.

I wasn't expecting A Girl Called Owl and was pleasantly surprised when it arrived in the male all wrapped up beautifully in snowflake paper. It was beautiful and at the time I had no idea why they chose to put the book in such wrapping. I thought the book might have been about an owl and more animal related then what it was actually about, which it turns out is about Jack Frost and Mother Nature and all the other elements associated with the seasons. It was also a story about strong friendships, learning who your family is and growing up.

Upon starting it I couldn't put it down. From the first page where you have:
When you have a kid, don't call it something stupid.
Don't call it Apple, or Pear or Mung Bean.
Don't call it Owl.
This advice is a bit late for me. Because she did. She did call me Owl. Thirteen years ago she looked down at a tiny little baby- me- and decided that Owl would be a good way to go.
To the very end of the book you are lead on a fantasy filled story that will leave you wanting to read this book every time the weather gets cold. Plus with the main character's (Owl's) life changing moments throughout the book you instantly fall in love with her. She is so strong throughout the book with everything that she learns and what she overcomes. But by far my favourite aspect of the book was Jack Frost. I haven't read a lot about Jack Frost or know too much about him (besides what I learnt from the movies Rise of the Guardians) but I absolutely loved the authors portrayal of him. He was everything you could want in Jack Frost.

I would highly recommend A Girl Called Owl although it may suit younger readers more than adult readers.
