Long before she was the terror of Wonderland- the infamous Queen of Hearts- she was just a girl who wanted to fall in love.

My review
Thoughts on the book:
Heartless is the first stand alone novel by bestselling author, Marissa Meyer and is based on the early life of the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland. Once upon a time she was a sweet young girl who wanted to open her own bakery with her best friend, so that everyone around the countryside would come and taste her treats. But her parents plan to have her marry the King and become queen and if that happens her bakery idea will go up in smoke. Suddenly the new Court Jester catches her eye and suddenly the bakery isn't the only thing on her mind. Can Catherine have the bakery she dreams of and the love that she wants so badly, or will she be forced to do as her parents wish and marry the King?

Now I must admit that I have never actually read the original Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll so some of the references that they made in the book didn't actually resonate with me. Now that I have admitted this I will get on with my review. I was so excited when I got the email off Alana from Pan Macmilan asking me if I wanted to be a part of the Heartless blog tour that she was organising. When I was told what the book was about I thought that it would be right up my ally as I am really loving retellings of fairy tales at the moment and anything fantasy genre is being devoured. So when I read what Heartless was about I said sign me up and I can tell you now it certainly didn't disappoint. Catherine is a sweet society girl who has her whole life ahead of her. She plans on opening her own bakery for her renoned sweets that she makes but there is something standing in her way, a props all from the King and of course her parents. Just as the King is about to propose a mythical beast ends up bursting into the ball room and scaring everyone. But that's not the only thing that happens that night, Catherine meets the new court Jester and falls head over heels for him. What follows is an exciting eye opening experiences for Catherine filled with adventures and love.

I found the land of Wonderland to be very enchanting and the characters in Heartless to be some of the best that I have read in fantasy fiction. Most are based on characters that we now from the Alice in Wonderland movie. I especially love Catherine, her maid Mary Anne, Cheseire and Jest (the court jester). I really liked the romance that also occurred between Catherine and Jest too. They may have had quick whirlwind one but they are certainly the best ones in my opinion and thee epic ending of theirs will be one to certainly remember. I think Heartless is certainly one of the best retellings of a fairytale and many will fall in love with it.

P.S this is how the book came to me for review. How amazing is it.
